Book Name : The Book Thief
Author : Markus Zusak
My Rating : 4.5/5
Hi!! It's been a long time since i wrote a book review. After all i am not the book thief, i have to buy or lend books so it takes time. This new year i came with a amazing book recommendation for you. A story with different dimensions. Kind of a classic novel. One of the best thing about this novel is, death narrates the story. yes, you read it right here not protagonist, characters or author narrates the story, it is death.
When Death narrates a story you really have to listen
Story slowly unfolds itself and get you inside of it. you slowly started to live along with Liesel in Himmel Street. Hey, i forget to mention who is Liesel, she is the book thief and this story is about her.
I reveal you one thing, if you are a book lover you can easily connect with Liesel. She reflects the part of every Bookoholic. Her love towards books and words is a heart melting thing to read!
Characters:
This story has so many characters as like the length of it. Here i mention about some characters which i feel important
Liesel Meminger of course the sweet little protagonist of this story. A thin pale girl who not only steal the books also the heart of readers.
Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann came as a foster parents of Liesel. They are such kind of persons who completely filled with love. Hans is a painter by profession, accordionist by passion and a beautiful human in nature. Rosa call every man as saukerl and every women as saumensch. Cursing is just a habit for her.
Next one is Max. he is a jewish fist fighter. I don't want to reveal more about him. But he is the most important character of this story.
Then Rudy a friend of Liesel. A half boy friend to be precise. he is a kind of guy who always plead Liesel for a kiss. do you want to know whether Liesel kissed him or not?? then read the story. With that next one in the list is Illsa Hermann , she is the wife of mayor. I also don't want to say much about her.
Finally we came to the last person. Mr Death of course how can you neglect him. Narrator of this story. Markus zusak delivered a stunning performance behind the character of death. again i am telling you, when death narrates a story you really have to listen.
Story Outline:
Well, it starts with the description of colors by death. He give a explanation to each and every color in his own way. Then Liesel come into the story, she is travelling in a train along with her brother to meet her foster parents and live with them. On the way her brother died because of some disease. This is where the book thief steal her first book. She is going to steal many more.
Then she started to live with her foster parents along with her grief of her lost brother. Thoughts of her brother doesn't let her to sleep also to bed witting.
That is where Hans comes into the picture. Those dreary nights actually lit the lamp in Liesel life. She slowly grow in Himmel street with not that happiness who got always scolded by mama loved by papa and both by Rudy. One day a new person come into their family. who he is? what changes he made? why he came there? Answers to all these questions are there in the book.
Liesel steal different books of different colors. But the most important one is black book. why it is so special? What is there inside of it? what it does to Liesel? Death is waiting to tell you the answer for all these questions.
This is a story for every book lover. This is the story for those who believe in words. It has a another small book inside of it, It has different metaphors, Different ways of narration and Every chapter is unique in some way or another. It keeps on moving like a sea to ocean. Being a German, Markus zuzask perfectly captured the adverse effects of Hitler Nazi government in this story.
Recommended Or Not?
Without any questions, yes!!! It is a Literary fiction which is like a buffet dinner. you will be given a plate that is book. You can take whatever you want. as much as you can. almost every chapter, every part even every page is unique in nature.
Death is not good at keeping secrets. He reveals what is going to happen next much before itself. But the matter is how it is happening. That is where the Markus deliver a stunning performance. With here elegant way of narration and suttle way of story telling.
It is not one time readable. I think you keep on discover something every time you read this book. This 586 page book is a perfect classical novel.
If you have any book suggestion, tell me. I will read it and write a review about it. Thanks for reading. Have a good day!!!
