This is my third novel of Khaled. Already read Thousand splendid sons and Kite Runner. I should say this is not as good as remaining two. But it is unique and real.
This story also did not fail to speak about the pain of Afghans. War, loss of life, Intervention of taliban and suffering continue to run in background here also. I think the same template makes the story as not so interesting one. If you hear the same thing again and again, you will loss interest in it. Same applies here also.
It is about the unconditional love of a Brother and Sister. Abdullah who is a brother of his two year old sister Pari, take care of her as his own daughter. They lost their Mother while she giving birth to Pari. That is where Abdullah took the responsibility of a Mother. This won't continue for a long time.
Pari's father gave Pari to a wealthy family due to his poverty and for a good life for his daughter. That is where Abdullah and Pari parted from each other. Remianing of the story continue to revolve around their lifes.
This story not goes in a narrow path and it is not only about Pari and Abdullah. Though they play a major role. Though it starts and end with them. It spoke about the life of different other people around them. It spokes about their hardships, Sufferings and their reasons.
When you settle with a story of one person, Author switch to a story of another person. It does not help to make a real connection with characters. In Kite runner and Thousand Splendid sons, we live as one among the characters. When something happen to them. it feels like, it happen to us. But here we cannot able to make that connection. I should say Khaled failed to give his touch here.
There are some beautiful moments in the story which is worth to mention. Like, Markos ( Who came as a doctor in this story) took a picture of his sister Thalia. They make a camera on their own, to test it. They went to beach and Markos want to use his sister as a subject. She climbed on top of a rock and ask his brother to count upto 120 before taking picture.
And the count will begin from one, two, three. In between the counts author explain us about the current life of Doctor. Count continue to come in between narration. It is worth to read.
Similarly, there are two scenarios in this story. In one, a girl love her dog and the dog also love her like she is the world to him. In contrary to this, Another situation, a girl suffer because of a dog. An irreplacable damage she continue to bear it throughout her life. These are some of the examples of Khaled Intelligence,
Over all this story is worth to read. An engaging story with different layers. Give it a try, Have a good day!
